Puerto Rico's Gubernatorial Candidates Offer Competing Visions on Debt

In Puerto Rico’s gubernatorial primary election on June 5, 2016, a central issue was the candidates position on the commonwealth’s debt problems. The election occurred in the context of a bill working its way through the U.S. Congress – the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act – that would set up an oversight board for Puerto Rico’s government.
