The Return of the Urban Financial Crisis

Alternatives to Bankruptcy Conference

November 1, 2013

Jim Spiotto discussed the recent wave of municipal defaults, including issues surrounding the role of state and local government regulations, expectations of the bondholders and financial community on the current state of municipal finance, what declining cities can do to avoid bankruptcy, and lessons learned from preceding defaults at Brown University's Alternatives to Bankruptcy Conference.

The conference was co-sponsored by the Ford Foundation, the Culver Lectureship, the Harriet David Goldberg Endowment, and the Urban Studies Program, and convened scholars and practitioners from around the United States to discuss the causes of and alternatives to municipal bankruptcy under austerity conditions.
